After 14 years, a popular live video chat website Omegle stops its operation, following the complaints of users about their abuse.

A chatroom that enabled people to socialize with any strangers they met online gained popularity among children and youngsters during this period of pandemics.

However, upon announcing its closure, Omegle included a picture of its logo on a gravestone.

The founder of the business, Leif K. Brooks said in a statement that running the site was unsustainable “financially and psychologically”.

This is particularly important in that such social media platforms face ever increasing pressure emanating from regulators globally.

Ofcom has just released guidelines on how to comply with the UK’s Online Safety Act and singled out child Online grooming this week.

Omegle court case was probably the most popular controversy that surrounded this platform in recent memory when a teenager from US alleged that Omegle had coupled her up with an internet-age stalker commonly known as “paedo”.

The incident happened in 2011 while the account user was a minor which is different from the time of filing a lawsuit against Omegle in November 2021.

Omegle’s legal team presented this argument in court, claiming that their site did not cause what happened and they were not a home of predators at all.

On Thursday, Mr. Brooks commented “any genuine assessment of Omegle must include the observation that some individuals abused it in horrific and unimaginable ways.”

Yet, he also noted, albeit in vague terms, about the “continuous bombardment of communication services” like Omegle by some set of malevolent individuals.”

Sadly, I would love for matters to be different but the struggle of this fight along with the prevailing struggles encountered when running Omegle and preventing its misuse is just too much for Mr Brooks.

He continued to say; “frankly, I will not like to suffer from an attack in my 30s.”

A study by the BBC showed that over 50 prosecutions against pedophile perpetrators referenced Omegle, notably in the UK, US, and Australia.

In 2021, BBC investigations revealed that there were pictures of children exposing themselves apparently to strangers in Omegle video sharing platform and TikTok then banned sharing of its links on TikTok after several months had passed by.

According to the IWF, there has been a dramatic increase of about 10 times in imagery depicting small children engaging in sexual activities while on video during the lockdown period.

The IWF noted over 63,000 websites with this material in 2022, while the same figure was just 5,000 pre-pandemic.
