The US military in Japan is bulk-buying the country’s seafood as a result of China’s bar banning imported goods from Fukushima since its release of sea treated water.

US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel remarked that Washington could, possibly, consider additional tactics for neutralizing China’s ban.

This, he referred to Beijing’s “economic warfare”.

Accordingly, China, as the largest purchaser of Japans sea products said they restricted imports for safety reasons.

Japan sold over one hundred thousand tons of scallop in China last year. The first order under the US program is only a little less than one ton for each of these kinds of shellfish.

According to Mr Emanuel Mr.Reuter’s news agency, this marks the beginning of a long term contract which will extend to all kinds of sea foods at an all time frame.

These purchases will be utilized to cater for the military personnel that will also be sold in shops and restaurants within the Japanese based Military.

“This will be a very long term contract between the American army and fishing and coops of these areas,” Emanuel noted.

Until then, the US military did not buy seafood in Japan, and the administration of President Bush could also check its fish imports from Japan and China, said Mr Emanuel.

In response to Mr Emanuel’s comments, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a news conference on Monday: the duty of Ambassadors is to foster peace among nations and not to muddy waters and antagonize other States”.

Recently, Mr Emanuel has discussed China’s economic policies, relations with foreign firms, etc.

His statements come after some leading american figures namely secretary of state Antony Blaken had been visiting Beijing aimed at cooling down bilateral relations between two giant economies.

In this case, Rahm Emanuel, the United States Ambassador to Japan, assured the US military would purchase at least 100,000 tons of seafood from Japan within the following year.

He noted that this is a “strong message of support” for the Japanese’s fishery industry affected by the Chinese import ban.

An official at the Chinese foreign ministry stated that China’s ban of Japanese seafood was ‘scientific and reasonable’ for protecting public health.

He declared that this transaction by US military could be considered as the political provocation, and it will not influence China’s point of view at all.

United States of America has been purchasing food from Japan since their military days. The military expenditure for Japanese foods in the US was over a million dollars in 2021.

China continues pressuring Japan economically, therefore, the US army buys Japanese seafood for the sake of supporting Japan’s economy and demonstrating unity with the island state.

Besides, the US military’s purchase of seafood from Japan can be viewed as a response to the increasing role that China plays in this region. For instance, China has been increasing its military activities within the Pacific Ocean and is also using its economic threatenings on some of its surrounding states.

The US military purchases seafood from Japan as a gesture to China, stating that they are ready to support their allies.

The Chinese are yet to reveal their reaction to American military purchase of Japanese seafood. China is known for retaliating its perceived enemies by taking certain actions in order not to be outdone.

Nonetheless, China can choose to overlook the fact that US military bought Japanese fish, just not to heighten tension level any more.
