The latest indication that the tech giant is automating more of its operations is that Amazon is testing humanoid robots in its US warehouses.

According to Amazon, the change will “free up employees to better deliver for our customers.”

It claimed to be testing a brand-new robot named Digit who can move, grab, and handle objects similarly to a human.

Amazon “has been treating their workers like robots for years,” a union claimed.

“Amazon’s automation is [a] sprint to job losses from the front. In fulfillment centers, we’ve already seen hundreds of jobs vanish due to it, said Stuart Richards, an organizer for the UK trade union GMB.

At the time of the announcement, Amazon claimed that its robots systems had actually assisted in the creation of “hundreds of thousands of new jobs” within its operations.

“This includes 700 categories of new job types, in skilled roles, which didn’t exist within the company beforehand,” the company stated.

The IT company claims that more than 750,000 robots are currently employed by it, frequently performing “highly repetitive tasks” “collaboratively” with its human workforce.

Tye Brady, the chief technology officer at Amazon Robotics, told reporters at a press conference in Seattle that people were “irreplaceable” and refuted the idea that the company would eventually have totally automated warehouses.

“There’s not any part of me that thinks that would ever be a reality,” he stated.

“People are so central to the fulfilment process; the ability to think at a higher level, the ability to diagnose problems.”

Not wheels, but legs

Digit does not move on wheels, but rather on two legs. Additionally, it has arms that can pick up and carry items like containers, packages, and consumer orders.
