Reddit to Monetize Popular Posts, Creators to Receive Up to 50% of Revenue

Reddit has announced intentions to start paying its top contributors money for popular posts on Tuesday in the US.

The social networking platform will share income with users who pay a charge in exchange for receiving “gold” awards from other users.

Users will receive up to half of the price range of $1.99 (£1.63) to $49 (£40) for gold rewards.

It represents a turning point for the business following a backlash in June when a large portion of Reddit was made inaccessible in opposition to its senior management.

In the end, the majority of groups on the platform were back, however some prominent omissions persisted, such as the closure of a long-running subreddit devoted to transcribing Reddit images to make them more accessible for those who are blind.

A subreddit is a forum on the platform, or, to put it another way, a group of individuals who come together to talk about a specific topic.

Instead of following specific people on other platforms, users, or Redditors, often join a number of subreddits and see posts from these communities in their feed.

This website has had gold for a while, and its original purpose was to act as a kind of virtual award for comments or posts that users particularly enjoyed.

Redditors could pay a small price to give another user gold, but there would be no actual value to the gift, and the money would be used to maintain the Reddit platform.

However, it did have the advantage of changing how a user interacted with the website.

A user could once surf Reddit for a week without seeing any advertisements if they received a gold award. Later, a more expensive platinum prize allowed Redditors a whole month free of advertisements.

Always have faith in gold

On the social media site, the announcement has divided people.

While some Redditors voiced worry that it would make the site “substantially worse,” others continue to be cautiously optimistic.

Social media researcher Matt Navarra stated, “I think Reddit had to find a way to reward its most valuable users. “You need to give top creators opportunities to make money, either by paying them directly or by giving them resources to make money from their fans,” the author writes.

However, he noted that there was a chance that rewarding people with actual cash would have an effect on the type of content that becomes popular on Reddit.

“X now rewards Premium subscribers with an ad revenue share tied to the number of impressions, or views, of ads a user generates in their tweet replies,” the spokesperson declared.

“This encourages X users to post content that receives the most comments, and the traits of content that typically receives the most comments are content that is polarizing, provocative, and controversial—exactly the kind of content that brands do not want their ads to appear next to.

“Elon Musk has had issues with this, and the founders of Reddit may have new issues as well,”
